legendary Cynthia Plaster Caster |

Cynthia Plaster
Caster is a sculptor who lives in Chicago. Since the 1960s, she has cast in plaster the
male genitalia of her musical idols. Some of her models have included Jimi Hendrix,
members of The Lovin' Spoonful, Savoy Brown, Led Zeppelin, and the Mekons. In these
portraits, she seeks to demystify the untouchable legacy of musical genius as a learning
experience for herself and to explore the weaknesses of these icons. |

She made her name memorializing the most prized equipment of famed rockers like
Hendrix. Three decades later the work's still hard, but satisfying. Cynthia
Plaster Caster became famous in the 1960s for making plaster casts of rock stars' penises,
and she's honest about what inspired her. Her work is not a commentary on the sexual
revolution, she says, nor a statement about the nature of celebrity. She doesn't
glorify what she -- and her artwork -- is all about. She's just a woman with a sly
sense of humor and a passion for rock 'n' roll -- and men. |

About casting Jimi-
"The Godfather of Whopper Choppers in my collection! Because this was one of
my first shots at plaster casting, the end result came out kind of gnarly. I prematurely
cracked the mold open, only to find a still-moist, broken cast inside. So yes, Jimi did in
fact, break the mold! But thanks to Elmer's Glue, I managed to reconnect the head to the
shaft to the testicles. Very statuesque and antique-looking; like Grecian art. There's no
denying that Jimi towers over most of my collection. His long, thick shaft combined with
his disproportionately small head brings a shudder to the spinal cord!"
Memories-
"Jimi's pubes got stuck in the
mold because I didn't lube them enough. I spent the next 15 minutes pulling out each
individual hair one by one, while he had intercourse with just the right sized repository
— his negative impression! This unexpected delay made him late for his show
that evening, where he was seen scratching his crotch a lot onstage." |
